"Siren Song" : Meet The Cast https://mahoganimedia.zenfolio.com/blog/2015/2/-operationmakeamovie-meet-the-cast Thanks to the efforts of #OperationMakeAMovie (a crowdfunding campaign on GoFundMe). and other campaigns afterward, I was able to shoot my very first short film.

It's called Siren Song, and it's the story of a caged songbird named Raven

Raven is a natural beauty with a raspy voice who spends her weekends entertaining the patrons at a jazzy music venue called Blue J's.  Raven is a powerful singer who idolizes great vocalists like Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald.

Raven started off at Blue J’s as a cocktail waitress and eventually replaced the house vocalist after meeting Q.  He took to her and decided to manage her, asking Mama Blue to put her on stage.

Since then she and Q have been inseparable and she’s seen his loving and extremely dark side.  Though Q has become more of a boyfriend to Raven than a manager, he still keeps watch over her career, and asserts his dominance in their relationship through manipulative mind games.

Though Raven is completely loyal to Q, Raven is being pursued by Jay, who is far from a kingpin and much less flashy than QJay became a fan of Raven’s after coming to the club and has been wooing her, and angering Q in the process.  Raven only sees him as a friend, but his persistence is slowly wearing her down.

When an opportunity of a lifetime comes about, Raven has a chance to free herself from the gilded cage Q has her trapped in, but Q is blocked her freedom ... and Jay is more than ready to come to her rescue.

Now that you know the story ....

MEET THE CAST:

Blythe Dennis

RAVEN

Raven will be played by Blythe Dennis, a soulful singer/songwriter based in Dallas, TX.  The Louisiana native and GSU alum has performed in music venues and at music events in both states.  Her musical influences include Musiq Soulchild, Erykah Badu, Marvin Gaye and Billie Holiday. Blythe has a few acting roles under her belt, but this will be her first film role.  We are excited to have her aboard because we are sure of her amazing talent.  Blythe will be entertaining you both on-screen and off, as she will be penning original music for the film's soundtrack!

Follow Blythe on twitter @BlytheDennis or on IG @manyarecalled (she has videos of her singing talent there).

Devin "DC" ChretienDevin "DC" Chretien

Q

Q will be played by Devin "DC" Chretien DC is a rap artist and Louisiana native. A former college athlete, he is now in pursuit of a music career. Under the BNM/YEI affiliation, DC has released several mixtapes and performances at events in the region.  Film is a logical next step to extend his artistic platform.  DC has performed in plays in his younger days and now wants to take on this role as his comeback performance.  DC will also be contributing to the film's soundtrack, adding his lyrical skills to the project.  You can follow him on IG @dc_bnmyei

Courtesy AJ HallAJ Hall as JAYEncouraged by his mother, Louisiana/Texas native AJ HALL attended a performing arts school when he was younger and he attributes the experience to his artistic talents, and ability to communicate effectively in any environment. Over a decade later, AJ is now a poet/lyricist, author, songwriter, musician and motivational speaker ... who now wants to try his hand at acting. Blowing the director away with his audition for the role of Jay, we are sure AJ will bring this part to life on screen and impress (and possibly surprise) the viewer. You can follow AJ on IG or Twitter @saelahunplugged.

JAY

The character of JAY will be played by AJ Hall.  Encouraged by his mother, the Louisiana/Texas native attended a performing arts school when he was younger and he attributes the experience to his ability to communicate effectively in any environment. You can follow AJ on IG or Twitter @saelahunplugged

Mahogani's "Best Moments of 2014" https://mahoganimedia.zenfolio.com/blog/2015/1/best-of-2014 Mahogani Media: Blog Pix &emdash;

The year 2014 was a year of transition for me.  I met a lot of my goals, reached a few milestones, had good times and bad times … but most of all I finally let go and let God guide me outside of my comfort zone called Louisiana … to a place where I can be inspired and work toward reaching goals I’ve had for a life time.   Here are just a few of my favorite memories of 2014:

New Faces

One of my major professional goals for 2014 was to get some new faces in front of my lens.  Even though I love my faves … my portfolio was getting a little redundant lol.

Thankfully, after a few hits, misses, fakes and flakes --- opportunites finally came.  I had the pleasure of shooting the amazing Polymodel Moana when I visited Dallas to handle some biz and hang out with my girl Tiffany Walker who designs Pink Lucy

An impromptu shoot commenced and we got some great shots that you can find in my Top Shots of 2014.  My fave was the one of her looking in the mirror (pictured right) which I got on the fly.  I love shooting with ambient light and her skin just glowed! Love it!

Also in the year I got to shoot my new chica Li Torres Brown.  She wanted to get back into modeling and I wanted more ethnic variety in my port, so I did a closet pull and we took off to a couple of locations and had a ball!  Some other newbies I had the pleasure of shoot was my girl Laneshia, who’s natural hair and fit body was perfect for a silhouette session while she did some yoga poses … and my future screen-star Candice who proved that full-figured women can rock photo shoots too!

Thanks to all the ladies who added some variety and spice to my portfolio in 2014 … Hope to do more in the coming year! J

Bad Buddha

One of my favorite moments of 2014 was my only time on set the entire year … working on an indie short called Bad Buddha

It was a weekend shoot in my hometown with 10-12 hour days.  The director Clay gave me a chance as my first time being a Scripty (Script Supervisor) for his short he entered in the Louisiana Film Prize.  I don’t think I did an amazing job but I know what to do right the next time! Lol.

Clay was a good director and I learned a lot working a great group of people, especially the films still photographer Jim Noetzel.  #Salute to him!

Check out the film HERE

And check out more photos I shot from Behind The Scenes HERE.

Hands down one of my favorite events of 2014 - Unscene's February event. I was able to bring the Live Beats Cypher to the crowd with the help of super-artist (graphic designer, rapper and producer) NATE TREME.

(L to R: EFF!M, Mikey Tyner aka King Author, RaiTHRILLA, DC on the mic, Nate Treme on the beats)

Live Beats Cypher

One of my favorite events in 2014 was part of UnScene Shreveport, which was a monthly event that brought a variety of art in one place for all to enjoy.

I was fortunate enough to pitch an idea for a Live Beats Cypher after I witnessed an awesome beatmaker named Nate Treme bang out some beats on his MPC during an Arts Market the prior Fall.

He was just drawing attention to his wife’s booth but when he handed his mic to a couple of lyricists who gathered to listen, the idea came to me.  He and I both chose four lyricists each and they freestyled to beats that Nate created LIVE.  [Don’t worry, they HAD to keep it clean! Lol].

Everyone told us how much they enjoyed it … and I hear they still do it when they have hip hop events and Nate is there.  It’s awesome to have brought so many great hip hop artists together and know they’re still collaborating to this day.  :)

MM Celebrates 5 Years!!! (graphic created by ForthCeed Pro Designs)MM Celebrates 5 Years!!! (graphic created by ForthCeed Pro Designs)

#MM5

It almost got away from me but I did remember that Mahogani Media’s 5th Birthday was this year.

Though the IDEA of Mahogani Media was conceived when I was an undergrad at LSU, I posted the date as the same day I had my first professional shoot … April 18th … because that’s when the vision actually became a reality and my business was formed.

To commemorate the occasion I attempted to do a few anniversary shoots, including with the person I first shot but things didn’t go as planned.  I did manage to get one done with my first ever Male Model, Shad Small … We got some great shots (many of which I still have to post lol).

It’s still crazy to me that it’s been 5 years since I decided to make my talents work for me instead of just letting other people use them for profit … and honestly, as hard as it’s been, I haven’t regretted it.

Here’s to the next 5 years and all the greatness I know it has in store!  #Cheers

MFA Life

One of the most major things that happened to me in 2014 was being admitted to an Art School to finally pursue my MFA.

I wrote about this in my blog before … about the tough journey of pursuing something that was “safe” just to please others and then realizing it was a huge mistake.

But last year, I started the year with the motivation to try again.  So I did some research, contacted a school I’d been in communication with but never applied to, got my stuff together, did an awesome portfolio video (thanks Zay!) and by May, I’d gotten my admission letter! And that’s only where it BEGAN.

Two hard-working semesters later, I have a 3.75 GPA and I’ve learned so much about film and about myself as an artist and filmmaker.  I know that being a woman, degrees are important to compete in this male-dominated industry, and I’m out to get it …. And I can’t WAIT to use what I’ve learned this year to put my ideas on film and out there in the world …

#MM2NYC

The biggest of my transitions in 2014 was packing up my entire life and moving to Newark, NJ.

For almost two years I’d been trying to move but obstacles kept coming at me (read about that in my personal blogs HERE and HERE).

But a friend of mine finally offered me his couch (Thanks DD!) and after booking my one-way flight, just a couple of weeks before my birthday I was officially an East Coaster.

I won’t say it’s been easy or that the offers have been pouring in … but it’s definitely great to be somewhere that inspires your personal and professional greatness.  After just a few months, it feels like home.

Mahogani Media: Blog Pix &emdash; Meeting My Idol

One of my top moments of 2014 had to be meeting my creative idol, Spike Lee.  After one instance where I was just 10 feet from him and I froze (like a true crazed fan lol), I  knew that if I ever got the chance again I would not let it pass.

A friend who lives in Brooklyn, showed me where his office for 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks was, and when I saw it, I felt the same way I did as when I first set foot in NYC.  I know it’s where I belong.

So when he had a pop-up shop there and invited people to come get 40Acres swag and get it signed, I made my voyage to BK and though I was super late, he was there when I got there.

I will share the FULL story soon, but just being there in his presence, I can’t explain it.  Someone who’s been on my creative mind for over 20 years and basically shaped my views of film had his arm around me taking a pic.  I know he does it for everyone, but it meant everything to me.

As I told my Facebook friends … that was goal one.  The next step is to work FOR him … and then work WITH him.  That moment is definitely a key motivator for 2015.

And speaking of 2015, if you haven’t check out my new page MM Films, please go do so.  And if you haven’t browsed through my Top Shots of 2014, do that as well.

This New Year is going to be an amazing creative journey for me.  I feel like I’m finally going to unleash all the talent that I’ve put on the shelf to help others for so many years.  I hope you’re ready!  But most of all I just hope you continue to support me ….

Wishing you a happy and prosperous new year everyone!

#OperationMakeAMovie https://mahoganimedia.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/12/-operationmakeamovie

In case you hadn’t checked it out yet, I’ve added a new page to the website called MM FILMS

It’s not a permanent name but it should give you a clue of where Mahogani Media is headed in the coming year.

Though I’ve been a fan of film my entire life, I was really enamored with the medium until I saw a little film called Malcolm X, directed by my creative idol – Spike Lee.

Sitting on the floor, in the front of an AMC Theater, I saw this masterfully directed biopic and I knew I wanted to make films that touched me the way this film did.

Even after becoming a student journalist in high school and working for the TV station (learning to shoot and edit), then going to college majoring in Mass Communication and minoring in film (during which I also took production and writing courses), I didn’t fully take on the role I truly desired.  I directed some things, but mostly took a back seat and served as the supporting staff on various TV and film sets.

After graduating college, then working in TV News, the fire to direct wasn’t rekindled until I worked on the film set of Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins under the direction of Spike's cousin Malcolm D. Lee

Watching how a film is made, how directors and actors interact, how a script comes to life – all of it reignited my passion to get behind a camera.

Though I ended up in still photography, that fire has been burning inside me for over five years.  And after starting my MFA program (finally) this year, I can no longer contain it.  I must fulfill this life-long aspiration.

Enter: #OperationMakeAMovie

For years I’ve watched others enter a fairly new festival that takes place in my hometown called the Louisiana Film Prize.  It’s a short film festival with a prize of $50,000 and only one rule – it has to be shot in that city.

The first year I didn’t feel I could compete.  I’m more of a documentary person, not a narrative feature person when it comes to writing and directing.  But as the years have gone by, and now with this MFA program underway, I have a new found confidence that even if it sucks, I at least want to make it happen.

So in 2015, I plan to MAKE A MOVIE. I feel more ready than ever before.  It will be a short film idea I’ve been brewing over for months now.  I have my cast in mind, my Director of Photography on board, plus a host of other supportive friends who will help me make this happen.

Now all I need is the FUNDS

Film-making definitely takes money – even indie film.  Crew rates, equipment rentals, permits, location fees, travel, editing/post-production, promotional materials, etc.  According to festival rules I have to raise the funds independently and that’s why I need the help of my friends and supporters to make this movie happen!

I will be posting GoFundMe and Kickstarter links in the coming days but for now, you can use the PayPal button below to make a DONATION that will go towards production costs.

Whether you donate $5 or $500, I will credit you in the film as well as on all social media and fundraising pages.  There will also be incentives/prizes for certain donation levels (TBA soon).

I am really excited about this journey and I hope to have your support.  Updates will be coming soon via this site and the MM Facebook Page so stay tuned.

#OperationMakeAMovie

is in full effect.

Thanks in advance for your support!

MM | Behind The Lens : BLYTHE DENNIS https://mahoganimedia.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/7/mm-behind-the-lens-w/-blythe-dennis

I first met Blythe Dennis at a local open mic called Words Over Lattes (at their first location).

The songbird was appearing with the special guest band, New Balance Band, and her sun-kissed natural hair, statuesque frame, and sultry vocals had me mesmerized.

Blythe and I became friends on social media thereafter and as I followed her life and career via the internet, I came to know she was just the beautiful spirit I thought she was when I saw her on stage.

As she prepared to release her debut R&B/Soul mixtape (Covers), I saw that she was doing photo shoots and asked if she’d shoot with me as well.

At the time she was in Dallas but we coordinated for her to shoot with me when she was doing a studio session in Shreveport.  Though she was visibly tired and still had a 3-hour drive back after our shoot, she gave me everything I expected – part diva, part model, and the perfect mix of sensuality and serenity.

I chose the hybrid urban/rustic backdrop of my apartment complex and we went to work …

As we got through the first few frames she asked if she need to hide her nose piercing.  I told her NO!  I wanted her to be herself and as comfortable as possible.

Though my styling wasn’t the bohemian-chic clothing she said she was used to wearing, it fit her and she served the lens just like I thought she would.  She also helped to model some pieces by a local accessory line, Layman’s Creations, giving me one of my favorite shots of the entire session:

It always brings me joy to capture the essence of an artist, as well as to take them out of their comfort zone a little and show a different side of them to their audience.  Shooting with Blythe was such a pleasure and I hope to do it again one day soon.

See more shots I took of Blythe in the ARTISTS & PERFORMERS album.

MM | Behind The Lens : TROOF https://mahoganimedia.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/7/mm-behind-the-lens-troof I met the hip hop artist TROOF at a local open mic, as part of the collective GFC (GoodFella Crew).

I think we became friends on social media and I kept up with his music there, frequently revisiting the open mic to see/hear him perform.  A mix of pretty boy swag and hard core lyricist, he was truly an enigma – and a cool dude too.

When his manager (now his future Mrs.) called me about doing a promo shoot for him, I was elated.  I’m always down to work with artists whose music I actually like.

I sent them some location options and they picked one near downtown, near some train tracks.  Together, the three of us used the afternoon to get some pretty dope stuff:

Though they had a concept in mind, we gravitated to various parts of the area and just let the creativity flow.

Like many of my artist-subjects, he was open to my suggestions … and like many of them, he ended up liking the shots that were more organic than planned.

Like this one:

And this one:

Several from this shoot made it to his new website.  And we’ve done several shoots since then … I’m also shooting their wedding this fall! :)

It’s always rewarding to me when clients become friends … when we’re able to build a relationship based on our creative energy.

Though I knew them before our first shoot, I got to know them even more after it.  And now we have a collaborative relationship where I know exactly what to give them and they come to me because they know I’ll deliver.

MM | Behind The Lens : LYVE https://mahoganimedia.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/7/mm-behiind-the-lens-w/-lyve I’d heard of the rapper named LYVE via social media.  I was told he was one of the best lyricists in the city.

A frequent battle rapper, I was trying to get him to participate in my Cypher, to no avail.  I finally got a call from his friend/rep that he wanted to book a service and get a mini-documentary and press kit done.

I was super excited -- eager to show him, and the city, what I was capable of creatively.  Usually the rappers stick to the boys club when it comes to media services so I was ready!

We met up in downtown Shreveport on a cold January morning.  He wanted a rundown location, so I chose one that I hadn’t shot at yet – behind Fairmont Apartments.  What once was a hot spot for downtown visitors is now just a bunch of abandoned structures and a hangout for homeless.

We started our morning with a photo shoot, then shot some video in the alley and the old garage (which is now a popular spot for photographers and artists).  I teased him about his “typical rapper poses” and made him laugh (as I tend to do with my subjects).

We talked about hip hop, of course, and about his upcoming mixtape (which has yet to be released).  We even shot part of the interview in a cage-like structure in between the old hotel and the current apartment building.

I learned a lot about LYVE that day … even got a chance to hear him spit live (pun intended).

On our way back to our cars, we made a pit stop … peeking in an the back door of the old hotel.  But some strange sounds sent us fleeing the building (which is now boarded up).

The result of our day together was this mini-doc:

And of course, we got some dope shots …  Here's LYVE’s favorite  -- out of around 200 images – was ironically one the first ones we took that morning:

It happens like that sometimes though (lol).

You spend an entire morning … months of editing … and the first frames are the ones the artist really connects with … so it’s like you did the rest for nothing.

It’s cool though … it’s better than him not liking any at all!  And he definitely uses the rest on his social media pages.

Since our shoot, we’ve become friends. He continues to work on his craft, and that elusive release date (lol).  I continue to work on mine as well … forever thankful that he let me tell his story.

Sometimes that’s the best thing about connecting with an artist/client – being able to bring their story to life via images.  Doesn’t get any better :)

See more shots I took of LYVE in the ARTISTS & PERFORMERS album.

Check out LYVE’s music HERE

Also, find him on Instagram and Twitter.

MM Weddings (Update) : Must-Read Pre-Wedding Articles + A New MM Teaser! https://mahoganimedia.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/7/mm-weddings-update-must-read-pre-wedding-articles-a-new-mm-teaser I shared a while back how I'd almost lost my love for doing wedding media because of a lot of disorganization and rude guests.

Not long afterward I found the most AMAZING articles that I believe EVERY person who has or ATTENDS a wedding should read ... So PLEASE check out:   Why You Might Want to Consider An Unplugged Wedding and Forever Hold Your Tweets ... ... These are two awesome articles to prepare for your wedding and all the paparazzi guests that come with it.

As a professional photographer/videographer, I always know that I will have to compete for space and opportunity at getting great shots with the hired photog (if I'm doing video) or the videographer (if I'm doing photos) ... and sometimes eager family members and friends make my job that much harder.

When you're trying to catch a couple in the moment, it's almost impossible to re-do or re-capture. I like authentic emotions and a journalistic style of shooting.  So, having to battle iPads in the aisle and continuous flashes from smartphones and pocket cameras is not only frustrating but it compromises the service I'm trying to give to my client.

So PLEASE read and share those two links if you're planning your wedding, about to get married soon, or you'll be attending a wedding in the near future.  Be mindful of those who are hired to capture those irreplaceable moments of this day and respect them and the couple by staying out the way.  That's all I ask -- for photographer everywhere! :)

Now, to the extra good stuff ...

I shot my only wedding in the month of June (only because I didn't book any more, thinking I'd be moved by now) and it was such a beautiful ceremony.

The couple (Nathaniel and Erika) was so loving towards each other and despite the battles to get great video, there was a lot of love in the room ... and as I mentioned in my previous blog, that's really the joy of shooting weddings.

With so much bad going on in the world, it's one of the few places to see genuine expressions of nothing but LOVE.

As a new service with MM Wedding Media, I'm  now providing couples with Wedding Teaser to not only share with those who didn't make it, but to give them a preview of their full DVD.  It's like a short film of their wedding :)  Check out the one I did for Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Egbon of Heflin, LA:

MM will be booking weddings locally until August 1st.  Please give me at least once week advance notice.  Contact me to book or to get quote!

Lastly, thanks to ALL of you who have supported MM over the past FIVE years ... and to all those about to jump the broom -- CONGRATS!

MM Celebrates Black Music Month https://mahoganimedia.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/6/mm-celebrates-black-music-month
June is Black Music Month ...

And I have to take a moment to recognize the music and culture that has  brought me so much joy (personally and professionally).

As a child I was brought up listening to Motown records (thanks to my Dad and his family) and it is still one of my favorite eras of Black music.

The soulful sounds of these polished artists are timeless and still some of my favorite music to date.

I was also a child of the MTV generation, which debuted when I was still in elementary school.

Hip hop, pop, and R&B dominated my music collection through the 80s and well into the 90s.  Everything from Michael Jackson and Prince, New Edition to Dru Hill, Tupac and Biggie ... and many more.

And though I'm a fan of all types of music (except heavy metal lol), I feel like no other music culture connects with me the way Black music does.  It is part of me.

So even after month-long celebration has ended, I plan to share some of my favorite Black Music Month inspirations on my Facebook page.  So go LIKE and follow my posts!

Now this won't be limited to legends and superstars.  I also plan to recognize the many local and regional acts that I have had the pleasure to work with personally.

I have created a public album called Artists & Performers with some of my work HERE

Feel free to browse and check it out ...

I will also be sharing some of the back-stories from some of these sessions throughout the rest of the month.

Rap artist Cameron Roland

Working with artists has been a passion of mine for most of my life ... And I've worked with them for half of my life.

From my days in radio, to event and label promotion, to writing hooks for indie acts, to managing and doing A&R for indie acts ... all the way to my photography and videography of today -- I do my best work with fellow artists.

Hip Hop Artists TROOF

It may be because we respect each other as creatives but when like minds come together, it's magical. I get to capture their spirit, soul and essence ... somewhat immortalizing them on film.  It's a sacred thing to me and is always a creative collaboration.

Songbird Blythe Dennis

So I want to make sure to salute those who are on the grind now ... hoping to be the superstars and legends of tomorrow.

Check back to see and read more on them as well.

-- And check out my blog dedicated to showcasing urban artists from my area --> 318Underground.

To all those amazing artists who paved the way and inspired or comforted me through their music -- I thank you.

And to all those who have let me in their world to capture their spirit and brand them through images -- I thank you as well :)

Why I No Longer Dislike Wedding Photography https://mahoganimedia.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/5/why-i-no-longer-dislike-wedding-photography Copyright Mahogani Media

A lot of photographers say it in private but won't admit it in public ... So let me be the first to say: I wasn't a fan of shooting weddings. But I did it, because I love being around the people.

The family and friends showing so much love to each other, and the couple, is the best part of the event.  But the standard photos captured at every wedding -- in the church, in the aisle, at the arch, bridal party, couple, etc, etc. -- are so monotonous that it got boring and tedious, and no longer excited me as a photographer.  I like being creative and it leaves little room for that most times (which is why I start preferring to do the video instead of the photos).

Because of the monotony, I seriously thought about removing wedding photography from my menu of services this season (Summer 2014).

Then I took a course on CreativeLive about doing Wow Wedding Photography by minimizing (or eliminiating) the traditional poses/images and injecting more storytelling into the wedding session.

This was perfect for me because my favorite thing to do, via any medium, is tell a story.  As a professional journalist, it's my passion.  So to be able to pursue that passion in any session -- including a wedding -- was exciting.

Over the two-day course, the instructor showed us ways to wow our couples and bridal parties with amazing images that weren't your average wedding photo.

He shot bridal, couple, wedding and personality portraits all in one day.  I was so amazed!  The whole experience lit a fire under me and I was actually excited to shoot another wedding!

So when a friend called me to shoot her wedding, the week after I took the course, I gladly accepted.  I saw it as a way to test out what I'd learned.

Her wedding was not your average affair.  A small ceremony and reception at a lakefront venue.  She wore a simple, yet elegant white dress ... and the couple exchanged vows in the backyard, with the lake view as their backdrop.

Though the inconsistent lighting (the clouds were out at first and the sun appeared later) was a little bothersome, I used the tricks I learned to capture some extra-special moments.  Then after the ceremony, I had some alone time with the couple and got some great romantic moments of just the two of them.

Though I still don't consider weddings my favorite event to shoot, I now have a different perspective of how to get some of what I love as well as what the bride and groom expect.  I was able to wow the bride with images she really loved but wasn't even expecting me to capture ... and that's the greatest part of ANY shoot.

Congrats to Mr. and Mrs. Carl Grace ...

I thank them for trusting me with this special day.

Who's next?! :)

MM Celebrates 5 Years!!! (graphic created by ForthCeed Pro Designs)MM Celebrates 5 Years!!! (graphic created by ForthCeed Pro Designs)

At a local open mic, earlier this week, I was asked if April 18th was the day Mahogani Media was created.

And to that I answered No

If you read my previous blog on the history of MM, then you know that (technically) it was created over a decade ago.  But 2009 was when it was officially introduced to the public.

The significance of April 18th?  It was the date of my first PAID shoot under Mahogani Media

After months of doing free shoots and event snapshots to build my portfolio, a friend of mine booked me to shoot an artist he was managing at the time.

She was a recent transplant to the SBC, had a degree in audio engineering, had just scored an on-air gig at a local radio station -- and she was a dope rapper as well.  Her name?  Young Nisa.

We met up at a local recording studio (what is now Amore Studios.  I believe it was in transition/renovations at this time).

Her manager (my friend) used his new connection at YUMS Clothing to get her some gear to shoot in ... so these were not only promo shots for her upcoming mixtape, but also potential advertising images.

Nisa was all for it and seemed fearless. Inside, I was a ball of nervous energy but tried not to let it show.

She and the manager pretty much let me guide the shoot.  So I decided to use my portrait studio and event photographer skills to take advantage of the limited space.

We did some shots at the board, at the mic, and some other nooks in and out of the recording booth.

We even got some shots in the pitch-black entryway between the recording studio and what I believed to get a lounge/reception area.

I was very nervous, but I got through it.  Nisa was cool to work with and very receptive.

Even with the limited space and no additional lighting, I think we got some awesome shots.

My favorite went up almost immediately online:

Not long after the shoot, I found out that YUMS had chosen one of the images for a banner ad on their website.  Less than a year into freelancing, I had an image in an ad!

It may not have meant much to other people but I was elated ... and it gave me drive to do more.  I started reaching out to more artists I knew because I saw the crossover potential to get my work out there.

Family portraits are cool, but I like concepts and variety.

Though I've had some awesomely creative portrait clients, I tend to have a lot more creative control with models and artists.  And that fire to transform noting into something amazing was sparked in me from that very first shoot.

I've worked with dozens of local artists since.  Each a collaboration to showcase both of our talents.  MM Celebrates 5 Years!!! (graphic created by ForthCeed Pro Designs)MM Celebrates 5 Years!!! (graphic created by ForthCeed Pro Designs)

As I look ahead to the next five years, I realize that I want to explore other areas of commercial photography, like editorial/fashion.

In an effort to learn more and work more in that area, I think I'm going to start straying away from the saturated genre of individual and family portraiture.

Of course, I will still do them -- I would never deny my clients! lol.  But as an artist -- I need to spread MY wings and fly to the top.

I'm forever grateful for that first shoot.  That first opportunity to get paid for my work and be allowed to show what I can do.  It set me free creatively.

I'm thankful for every individual or business that hired me thereafter. You've helped me on this journey as an artistic entrepreneur.

I'm thankful for those who didn't hire me or denied me as an artist/professional --- you made me work harder.

I'm thankful for those who guided me in the beginning, who I've met along the way and those who are still around today.  Loyalty is Everything.  I appreciate it.

Most of all I'm thankful to the Creator for this gift that has literally saved my life and brought me out of the darkness many times over, and continues to bring happiness to my life and the lives of my clients and supporters.

Thank you for the last five years, and Cheers to the next 5, 10, 20 ....

#MM5 : the story behind the MM logo https://mahoganimedia.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/4/-mm5-the-story-behind-the-mm-logo In the five years MM has been in the market, I’ve been asked a lot about my logo.   Well, to be honest, it was an accidental creation by yours truly.

I’d commissioned a couple of graphic designers to create one for me, but being the picky perfectionist that I am, none of them seemed right.

A logo is so crucial to a brand. You have to choose it carefully because it will represent who you are every single time someone sees it.

I didn’t want something cheesy or over-the-top.  I wanted it to represent who I am as a creative mind. I wanted it to be bold, but not obnoxious and evoke a response the second someone saw it.

When the graphic designer submissions didn’t work out, I started playing with fonts on Microsoft Publisher (don’t judge me, I’m not a designer lol).

I knew that I want to incorporate the Virgo sign somehow because I was proud of my zodiac sign and the creative power behind it. I also wanted to incorporate my favorite color Blue (which most think is because I'm a member of Zeta Phi Beta, but it was my fave long before Zeta lol)

After trying many different options I deleted everything but the sign itself.   I paused and then sat there staring at it for a moment and thought – why not just the sign?

It was an M, which represents Mahogani and Media, and it represented me as well because I was the Virgo.  One letter, one symbol, one brand for us all!

So I created the original logo ----->>>

A year later, when I finally decided I wanted more professional business cards, the logo was upgraded and revised by my graphic designing friend (and fellow photographer) Teneatha Daniels (of TD Creations).  That is the logo I have used ever since:

New/Current MM logo - revamped by TD Creations in 2010New/Current MM logo - revamped by TD Creations in 2010

Unless they’re fellow Virgos, most people don’t recognize the sign and assume it’s just an M for Mahogani/Media.  And I like that.

There’s still a hint of me in the logo, but mahogani takes the spotlight and I’m hanging backstage – and that’s fine with me! Honestly, that’s how it’s always been. (LOL :)

Photography: From Filler Course To Full-Time Career https://mahoganimedia.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/4/photography-from-filler-course-to-full-time-career I’ve always enjoyed taking pictures.  I don’t recall having a toy camera as a child, but I do recall taking photos with my dad’s cameras.  He always had one for family visits and road trips and I was sort of his assistant – holding the camera, loading the film or taking photos when he wanted to be in them.  I even got into making photo scrapbooks of my school years, beginning in 6th grade.  I didn’t really like BEING in photos but I liked taking them and sharing them with others.

When I graduated from college in 2001 with a B.A. in Mass Communication, my intention was to go into radio, but News is where I ended up.  While working in news I was still exploring career options and took courses to get certified to teach.

My goal was to teach English or Journalism in high school and be the inspiring educator that helped another young person find their calling, like my teacher did for me.

I was taking courses at two different schools (a university and a community college) to fulfill my certification requirements, and had to choose some electives.

After so many courses in Psychology, Education and English, I wanted something creative to fill my electives.  Luckily the community college had some media courses and I chose to take an Intro to Photography course.  I thought it would be easy, but didn’t read all the requirements.  This was around 2002, just before everyone and their uncle started shooting with digital cameras, and unfortunately -- I had to shoot with FILM.

At first, I thought I’d hate it.  I thought anyone who’d spend all day in a stuffy dark room developing negatives into prints had to be crazy.  But after my first assignment -- during which I completely mangled the negatives but still came out with a great print -- I was hooked.

One of the first images I shot from negatives I developed! One of the first images I shot from negatives I developed!

After receiving praise from my instructor that I was able to get ANYTHING off the destroyed negatives, I felt like I had accomplished something by turning a negative (no pun intended) into a positive.

A few assignments later, I had to do a portrait. I did one of my nephew, and one of my brother’s dog.  My instructor told me that of all the different areas of photography that we’d done projects on, I had a knack for portraits and he suggested I look into that area of specialty.

I was a production assistant at a news station, studying to become a teacher, and now I had a future as a photographer? It was pretty far-fetched for me.  The course was really just my attempt at an easy A. I wasn’t an Art major like most of the other students.

The only reason I even considered his suggestion (for a minute anyway) was because this was a successful media/arts professional guiding me in that direction.  But after some thought, I decided to focus on the task at hand (certification) and just keep photography as hobby.

After a year or more of courses toward certification my dream was shattered by my main university.  Admissions rules had changed without my being notified and I’d wasted several semesters and lots of out-pocket-expenses but could go no further.  So I left the program.

In 2007, I left news for good (after producing at multiple stations) and spent time on some area film sets as a production assistant.  When my jobs were over, I decided to take some courses at that same community college to refresh my videography and editing skills (with digital equipment).

Needing money to help pay for classes, I somehow snagged a part-time job at a retail store that was about to open a new location -- with a brand new photography studio.  I thought since I already knew my way around a camera, and dark room, it would be a piece of cake. Unfortunately, all the studios had gone digital, so I had to learn all over again.

Digital Studio Life was not as easy as I’d thought it would be, but I finally got the hang of it (despite some sour attitudes among my managers and co-workers).

I guess I got pretty good at my job because customers started asking me if I did photography on the side and asked for my number to contact me for outside shoots.  I was told by managers and co-workers that this was against the rules of employment, but found out that many of THEM did photography on the side (guess they didn't want more competition). So, I started doing some research on branching out on my own.

my one and only - Nikmy one and only - Nik

In 2009, with help from my Dad, I purchased my camera and my journey as a freelance photographer began. I continued working at the retail studio and even did a stint as a seasonal photographer doing school pictures for private studios (to pay my Dad back).

By mid-2010, one year after starting as a freelancer, I wanted to do nothing else.  Being outside of the constraints of the studio, being able to create my own concepts, styling the models and having total creative control was exciting and inspiring.   I was hooked.

Studio Life had become so humdrum and monotonous, and I wanted a change.

So after three years, I left -- and I haven’t regretted it once.  (They actually closed the studio due to low sales a couple of years later, so it was probably a good decision lol).

I never imagined for one second while taking that course so many years ago that I would end up right where my photography instructor told me I should be.  I became a portrait photographer, and was good at it! Just like he said I would be.  And now I take pictures of people for a living … not to mention all the other services I provide.  What started as just an elective course, ended up being a part of my media journey (just like my high school journalism course, so listen to your teachers people!J).

The moral of this story is that you never know where your journey will take you.  What you may think is just a hobby could be the talent that helps you fulfill your destiny.  If I would’ve listened to my photography instructor back then, who knows how far ahead I’d be now.

But I’m thankful things came full circle and I was able to take advantage of those opportunities later … because now I’m truly living my purpose.

mahogani: the story behind the name https://mahoganimedia.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/4/mahogani-the-story-behind-the-name I’ve told this story a few times before but I definitely don’t mind telling it again ;-).

As I reflect on my five years as a freelance media professional, it’s only fitting that I share the story behind the name that started it all.

In '98-'99 I was an undergrad at LSU in Baton Rouge, working on my Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication.  I’d started publishing a hip hop newsletter, called Urban Word, which I distributed around campus.

The newsletter got the attention of one of the DJs at KLSU who hosted the alternative station’s only hip-hop show called Underground Sounds.  I was invited to hang-out during a broadcast of the show. He, his co-host and I became fast friends and I spent many a Monday night hanging out, sometimes even co-hosting with them.

Within the year the DJ named CJ suggested that I get my own show and referred me to the student program director.  I proposed an R&B show (later named The AfterParty) that ran right after Underground Sounds

Before my first show, CJ asked what I would call myself.  My given name and adolescent nicknames simply wouldn’t do, so I had to come up with something new.

I was taking a Greek Mythology course at the time and was in love with the goddess Athena (Goddess of Wisdom and Inspiration).  I decided that would be my name.

I shared my decision with the guys and was instantly shut down.  Thinking back it reminded me of that scene in The Temptations where they were told to go think of a new name.  I was told to the same.

Later that week, the movie Mahogany came on TV and though I’d seen it dozens of times before, I guess I never really paid attention to what was being said.  When the title character (played by Diana Ross) asked why her photographer/mentor Sean what name he’d chosen for her (as he named all of his “objects”), he replied:

“There’s only one word to describe something rich, dark, beautiful and rare … I'm going to call you -- Mahogany.”

That line stuck with me for days and I decided that would be the name I’d adopt as my new creative alter ego. I ended it with an “i” like my own name’s spelling variation and spelled it in all lowercase like one of my favorite authors did with his name -- e. lynn harris.  The name was approved by my KLSU counterparts … and along with my sultry overnight voice, the show was a success as well.

Mahogani to me was like Sasha to Beyonce. The alter ego allowed me to be a person that I wouldn’t normally be in public.  I was more confident, almost fearless – and it helped me create like never before.

Years later I wrote a plan for my future and the empire I wanted to build one day.  I would call it Mahogani Media, because it would encompass several forms of media, not just one.

I only shared this dream with my closest friends.  At the time, it was really just a dream … something that was decades ahead after paying my dues.  I never anticipated being an entrepreneur until much later in life.  However, after working in corporate media and having trouble finding work in my field, I took the leap a lot earlier than expected.

Now mahogani had been around the whole time, pushing me to creative heights as always, but now it was time for the two personas to merge and introduce my creative dream to the masses.

That introduction happened in 2009, and though it’s been a long, sometimes tumultuous journey, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.  Living my purpose is priceless.

I’m forever grateful that I was inspired back in college to step out and claim my own destiny.  Mahogani allowed me to reach goals I never would’ve imagined.  And to be honest, she still does ;-)

MM5 presents: Ask M https://mahoganimedia.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/4/mm5-presents-ask-m
If you follow me on Social Media you know that I'm pretty much an open book ... And when asked questions about the industry -- for the most part -- I am willing to inform.

Yet I know there are probably things people don't want to ask me directly because they're either shy or want to remain anonymous.

During the MM5 Celebration, I'll give you your chance to ask me ANYTHING.

I have an account on ASK.FM and for the next 2 WEEKS, I am fielding questions from friends, followers and fans!

You can ask about me personally or professionally.

You can ask about the industry if you're an artist or aspiring artist.

You can ask my opinion about current events or something you've always wanted to know.

Literally, ask me ANYTHING and (within reason lol) I will answer.

Now, I will save my answers for anniversary week and answer them ALL on WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16TH.  So you have until then to ASK M.  If your answer requires a little more than ASK.FM allows, I may answer on here on my blog.

Go HERE to ask me a question, or if you can EMAIL ME

So HAVE AT IT ... ASK M begins NOW!! :)

So check it out -- Every FRIDAY during the month of April (yes, even after our anniversary date) I will post Flash Sales on this blog. I will also post them to my twitter and Facebook pages.  Sales will begin at MIDNIGHT and end at 11:59 pm.

No, this is not an April Fool's joke. We would NEVER joke about saving money!!!

What kind of sales will there be?  Well I can't really say -- I could give 50% of any service or do a BOGO (Buy One Get One Free) on all services.  I may say you have to shoot today, within the week or let you book your service within the next 60 days. Whatever moves me that week! LOL.

And during our Anniversary Week (April 14-18) I will post Flash Sales EVERY DAY.  Some will last 12 hours, others will last 24 hours.  So get your funds together and make sure you're checking all the pages and this blog to save big on media services!

MM5 : Help Me Celebrate 5 Years in Freelance Media! https://mahoganimedia.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/3/mm5-help-me-celebrate-5-years-in-freelance-media
I can hardly believe it's been 5 years since I embarked on his freelance media journey but it has been!

In 2009, while still working part-time at a retail studio, I decided to step out on faith, purchase a camera and do my own photography on the side. That year, Mahogani Media (which had been on my heart and mind foryears) was introduced to the masses.

In April 2009, after months of free shoots to build my portfolio I acquired my first paid client under Mahogani Media. 3 years later, MM became an LLC.

5 years later I'm still enjoying the best decision I ever made, and I plan to celebrate this happiness with all of my clients and friends!

In honor of this joyous milestone I have some special things planned:

1. I will be sharing my favorite photos over the years, AND showing some never-before-seen-images plus sharing some stories from sessions past!

2. Every Friday during the month of April (and every DAY during our Anniversary Week -- April 14-18) I will be having Flash Sales for those who missed savings during Media Madness.  The sales will ONLY last 24 Hours and will ONLY be posted on my twitter page, Facebook page and send to our email list.  So be on the lookout! :)

3. I will be doing some special Anniversary Shoots with some of my favorite models of years past.  I will share a few images and the stories behind them as well!

4. I will be doing an #AskM session on Ask.fm. I will post when it will happen.  You can also email or tweet me questions that I will answer during the Anniversary Week (deadline is April 12th).  Anything you've ever wanted to know about me, MM or the industry. To ask your question, and get my answer, go HERE

5. I will also be doing some special giveaways.  If you pay attention to my blog, my social media pages and the AskM session, you'll have all the info you need to win FREE services and gifts!!! :)

Now here's the EXTRA special news ... Here's how YOU can help me celebrate!

1. Send me a video shoutout/testimonial! - (I'll be compiling them into a video to post on 4/18) ... If you're a client tell me about your experience.

If you're a fan, tell me why you love MM.  Tell me how we met and what MM has done for you!  If you've been to (or a part of) one of my events, tell me about .. If you're a friend just send me something extra special! After you're done, email it to me(Deadline is April 15th)

2. Send me a written shoutout/testimonial! - If you don't like the camera, just email or inbox me something to share on the video in written form.  Feel free to include a photo of your choice  [Same deadline]

3. Leave a Guestbook Message! - Go to www.mahoganimedia.com and leave a message there! It won't be included in my anniversary video but it would be greatly appreciated :)

4. Share, Share, Share! - Share my website or social media links. Share an MM video or photo and help me promote MM during this joyous time!

5. Refer Me! - If you can't book me, refer me to someone else!!! Referrals are ALWAYS appreciated!
